On September 22, Yazan crosses the border into Germany and is driven to a refugee camp for new arrivals in Mannheim. Although he’s happy to announce to his family and friends that he has finally made it to Germany, he would soon realize that his journey had all but ended.
After the German Foreign Office sent out a tweet stating that any Syrian that could make it to Germany was welcome to apply for asylum, the numbers surged to biblical levels. The German government accepted over one million refugees in 2015.
As it is now known, there has not been a larger displacement of people fleeing violence since the Second World War. A third of those seeking asylum are children.
